Aprender haciendo: un proyecto para cuidar la biodiversidad local

En el IES Doña Jimena seguimos apostando por un aprendizaje activo, colaborativo y conectado con el entorno. Por eso, este curso hemos puesto en marcha un proyecto interdepartamental y multinivel que une a los departamentos de Matemáticas, Biología, Tecnología e Inglés con la participación del alumnado de 1.º y 2.º de ESO.

Nuestro objetivo es doble:

• Aprender a través de la experiencia
• Contribuir al cuidado de la biodiversidad local

¿En qué consiste el proyecto?

El trabajo se desarrolla en distintas fases, en las que cada curso aporta su granito de arena:

• Investigación

El alumnado de 1.º ESO investiga las distintas especies de aves que habitan en nuestro entorno, aprendiendo a identificarlas y a comprender su importancia en el ecosistema. Presentan sus trabajos al alumnado de 2º.

• Diseño y construcción

En 2.º ESO, los estudiantes elaboran planos a escala en Matemáticas y construyen casas para pájaros en Tecnología, combinando precisión, creatividad y trabajo en equipo.

• Acción y seguimiento

Las casas se instalarán en el parque Dr. Juan Negrín y, en los meses posteriores, el alumnado realizará un seguimiento para comprobar si las aves las utilizan, integrando los datos obtenidos en nuevas actividades educativas.

 Mucho más que un proyecto

Además de embellecer el entorno y ofrecer refugio a las aves locales, esta iniciativa fomenta valores clave como la conciencia medioambiental, el aprendizaje práctico y el trabajo colaborativo.

Se trata de una acción visible y significativa que refuerza el compromiso con la educación sostenible y demuestra que aprender también puede ser una forma de mejorar nuestro entorno. Damos las gracias al Ayuntamiento de Gijón por habernos dado permiso y haber colaborado en la colocación de las casas. 

Seguiremos informando de los avances del proyecto… ¡las aves pronto tendrán nuevas casas gracias a nuestro alumnado!

Learning by Doing: A Project to Care for Local Biodiversity

At IES Doña Jimena, we continue to promote active, collaborative learning connected to our local environment. This school year, we have launched an interdepartmental and multi-level project involving the Maths, Biology, Technology and English departments, with the participation of students from Year 7 and Year 8 (1st and 2nd ESO).

Our aim is twofold:
Learning through hands-on experience and protecting local biodiversity.

What is the project about?

The work is organised in different stages, with each year group playing an essential role:

Research
Year 7 students study the bird species found in our local area, learning how to identify them and understand their role in the ecosystem.

Design and Construction
In Year 8, students create scale drawings in Maths and build birdhouses in Technology, combining accuracy, creativity and teamwork.

Action and Monitoring
The birdhouses will be installed in a nearby park. In the following months, students will monitor whether birds use them, analyse the results and incorporate their findings into new learning activities.

More Than Just a Project

Beyond beautifying the park and providing shelter for local birds, this initiative promotes environmental awareness, practical learning and collaboration. We are deeply grateful to the Townhall for allowing and collaboarting with the development of this project.

It is a visible and meaningful action that reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and education, showing that learning can also be a powerful way to care for our environment.

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2024

International Human Rights Day is celebrated every December 10 to promote the rights and freedoms of people in the world.

This year, to celebrate the 76th anniversary of its Declaration, we have taken a series of actions with the objective of making these Rights visible to the entire educational community. It is known that only 5% of the world's population has read the Human Rights at least once in their lives. For this reason, and with the aim of bridging this gap, the students of 1st bilingual ESO have created 30 posters that read each of the Articles both in English and Spanish. These posters can be seen displayed on the doors of every class. In addition, the same students have recorded them in both languages. You can see their work and listen to their voices in the above presentation.

Decorated Turkey Competition 2024! 

The students in 1º ESO bilingual have decorated the turkeys and have written what they are thankful for in life. Students in 2º, 3º & 4º ESO have also participted with their own gratitude posts.

Working as an architect: parking in the basement

'Working as an architect: parking in the basement' is an interdisciplinary project of Technology, Mathematics and English with students of 2nd ESO. The students, in groups, design a 3D parking lot for different types of vehicles, taking into account the current regulations (electric vehicles, spaces for disabled people, motorcycles, bicycles, ...). On a plan and a series of requirements already given by their teachers and using the computer program Tinkercad, the students design their own parking lot.

World Toilet Day

La Catedral de la Lluvia y El mundo es bosque

During the month of December, several visits of 4th ESO students to Laboral Art Centre and Industrial Creation have been carried out on the occasion of the celebration of World Toilet Day, which EMA Gijón commemorates every year . This year, in collaboration with Laboral Art Centre, several disciplines such as art, science and languages have come together to celebrate this event. Our students have had the privilege of seeing the premiere of the sound and visual artwork by Juanjo Palacios, La Catedral de la Lluvia, in which the process of creation of the storm tank of Hermanos Castro Park ,and its subsequent use, can be heard. The sensations perceived and the follow-up reflection have shown the need and importance of both  environmental civil engineering works, in this case related to the use of water and hidden from the view of citizens, and the relevance of art to bring these needs of the city to the viewers in a different way. 

After the first visit to the Catedral de la Lluvia, the students of 4ºESO Bilingual Programme attended La Ser radio programme, Hoy por Hoy, where the student Carlos Herminio Carballo, three times winner of the environmental storytelling contest of the City of Gijón, and his English teacher Ángeles González Bango were interviewed. Students Mara García, Claudia López and Laura Yáñez also answered questions from the presenter. 

Later on, they were invited to see the exhibition El mundo es bosque / El mundu ye viesca, where they were immersed in a fantastic biome inspired by the Asturian forests and the worlds of science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin.

Halloween Short Story by Adriana Fernández 2º B

Haunted School

Once upon a time, in 1921, there was a faraway village called Westview. There, very strange things happened all the time. A group of friends, Adriana, Sylvie and Steve decided to venture and go to the village to see if these stranger things were true. But they didn’t go any day; they went on Halloween s night!

When they arrived, all looked very normal, there weren’t any creepy things anywhere, so they kept walking. There were many children wearing costumes and they were trick or treating. Actually, there weren’t any strange things going on, but suddenly, Sylvie saw a poster that said: "no trespassing". She tried to convince them to go. When they passed, they started to see very strange things, the people were immobile, the friends were scared but they still walked. Adriana saw an abandoned school, so they went to the school. The school looked creepy. The door opened. All was dark, there was only a little bit of light. Adriana watched all with detail and curiosity, she saw  a special photography of a serious girl with a white dress, but if you looked at it better, it was like if there was something hidden. When Adriana called her friends, the song  “Highway to hell" by(AC/DC) started to play. They got very scared and they started to run. Sylvie went to the right, and bats appeared and started to surround her. Steve went to the left, and hands coming the up from the floor tried to catch him. Adriana went to the center and a ghost appeared. They tried to run until the song stopped. When the song stopped, the above things disappeared, but they didn't know where they were. Suddenly the wall that separated Sylvie and Steve disappeared, both heard the scream of Adriana's and they ran as fast as they could. When Adriana appeared, she had a broke white dress with blood on and she was looking downwards, when she looked up she said: "You wouldn’t believe that you would get rid of me easily, right? And her eyes lit up red.

Nobody knows what happened next, but the legend says that if you visit the school on 31st October in 100 years (in 2021) you will discover it...                                                                          

 

¿Quién controla los hilos?

Érase una vez, en 1921, había  un pueblo muy lejano llamado Westview, sucedían cosas muy extrañas, en todas las épocas del año. Un grupo de amigos, Adriana, Sylvie y Steve, decidieron aventurarse para ver si era verdad todo lo que decían de lo espeluznante de ese pueblo. Pero además, no fueron cualquier día, fueron justo en la noche de Halloween.
Cuando llegaron al pueblo se sorprendieron mucho, todo parecía muy normal, no era para nada como les habían contado, pero igual siguieron caminando. Había niños disfrazados pidiendo truco o trato, los padres se disfrazaron también para acompañar a sus hijos. La verdad, es que no había nada raro, pero de repente uno de los amigos, Sylvie, vio un cartel que ponía: no pasar. Ella los convenció para pasar, ya que podrían conseguir cosas extrañas. Se decidieron a pasar, y empezaron a ver cosas muy raras, las personas casi se movían, estaban tiesas. Aunque los amigos estaban asustados decidieron continuar. Adriana vio una especie de colegio abandonado y continuaron por ese camino. El colegio a simple vista ya se veía espeluznante, pero igual decidieron entrar, los dos estaban abrazados del miedo que tenían, cuando llegan la puerta se abre sola, entraron. Estaba todo oscuro, solo había un pequeño rayo de luz, ¿aún sigue funcionando la escuela o estará abandonada? Preguntó Steve, por la pinta que tiene, estará abandonada, le respondió Sylvie. Mientras, Adriana observaba todo con mucho detalle y curiosidad, se quedó mirando un cuadro en especial, aparecía una chica seria, con un vestido blanco, pero si lo detallabas mejor parecía que había algo escondido, Adriana le aviso a sus amigos, pero cuando se acercaron empezó a sonar la canción de highway to hell (ac/dc) todos asustados empezaron a correr, Sylvie se fue por la derecha, aparecieron murciélagos por todos lados y empezaron a rodearla. Steve se fue por la izquierda, a él le aparecieron manos del suelo que intentaban atraparlo. Adriana, que se había ido por el centro, se le apareció fantasmas y los cuadros la empezaban a seguir, todos seguían intentando correr hasta que paró la canción. Cuando la canción paró todo lo que se les había aparecido desapareció, pero no sabían dónde estaba cada uno. Pero de repente las paredes que separaban a Sylvie y a Steve desaparecieron, los dos oyeron los gritos de Adriana, empezaron a correr lo más rápido que pudieron, pero Adriana Apareció, pero estaba con un vestido blanco rasgado, llena de sangre y mirando hacia abajo, y cuando mira hacia arriba dice: ¿no creeríais que os desarías de mi fácilmente no?,  y si se le iluminan los ojos. Nadie sabe lo que pasó pero, cuenta la leyenda que si visitas el colegio el 31 de octubre dentro de 100 años (en 2021) podrías descubrirlo...

Our bilingüal experience

• ¿Quién se puede incorporar al Programa HablE?

Todo alumno o alumna que esté matriculado o se vaya a matricular en centros autorizados para impartir estas enseñanzas. No es necesario que hayan cursado la educación primaria dentro del Programa Bilingüe. 

          La incorporación del alumnado será voluntaria y los padres y madres o tutores legales del alumnado que desee incorporarse al mismo, deberán manifestarlo a la hora de formalizar la matrícula o cuando el centro lo solicite.

• ¿Qué asignaturas no lingüísticas vamos a estudiar en inglés?

El próximo curso  las asignaturas que se imparten en inglés en cada nivel son: 

                     1º ESO Biología e Historia

                     2º ESO Matemáticas y Tecnología.

                     3º ESO Matemáticas y Biología

                     4º ESO Historia.

• ¿Es necesario tener un nivel  muy alto de inglés para incorporarse al PH?

Para el aprovechamiento del programa es recomendable tener bien consolidadas las competencias básicas exigidas al finalizar la educación primaria.  La competencia lingüística se irá mejorando a lo largo del programa al estar todos los niveles expuestos diariamente a la lengua inglesa en varias materias.

• ¿Se valora el nivel de inglés en la evaluación de las materias No Lingüísticas?

En las asignaturas no lingüísticas se tiene en cuenta la adquisición de los conocimientos de cada área en particular, no el nivel de inglés.

• He oído que en las asignaturas no lingüísticas se dan menos contenidos que en las que no se dan en inglés, ¿es eso cierto?

No es cierto. Los contenidos que se imparten en cada asignatura vienen marcados por ley y no pueden variar. Esto quiere decir que vas a aprender lo mismo en el programa bilingüe que si estuvieras en el ordinario. 

Las programaciones didácticas, objetivos y contenidos, estrategias metodológicas y criterios de evaluación se adecuarán a las necesidades del alumnado y a las características del programa con el fin de facilitar el aprendizaje funcional de la lengua extranjera objeto del programa y contribuir a un desarrollo integrado de la competencia en comunicación lingüística. Además, se asegurará la adquisición de la terminología específica del área en la lengua española que posibilite al alumnado la realización de las pruebas individualizadas que pudiera haber en un futuro.

• No me incorporé al PH en 1º ESO, pero el próximo curso me gustaría unirme al programa ¿Puedo hacerlo?

De manera excepcional y respondiendo a las necesidades del alumnado y del centro, los estudiantes podrán adscribirse al programa en cursos posteriores, previa solicitud por escrito de sus familias o representantes legales.

• ¿Puedo abandonar el Programa HablE?

El Programa tiene una duración de 4 años, pero una vez finalizado el curso escolar el alumno o alumna podrá abandonar el programa, previa solicitud razonada de las familias o representantes legales, con el visto bueno del equipo docente, y la autorización de la Directora del centro educativo.

• ¿Hay alguna actividad complementaria y/o extraescolar específica del programa?

A lo largo de los cuatro cursos de secundaria se realizan diferentes actividades, proyectos y viajes dirigidos al alumnado de este programa de centro. 

Algunas de las actividades que se han realizando son:

• Viaje de inmersión lingüística de una semana a Irlanda o Reino Unido

• Concurso “El Pavo Indultado”, enmarcado dentro de la celebración popular  Día de Acción de Gracias en EEUU.

• Toilet Day: Pee, Poo, Paper

• Zero Waste. Visita a Cogersa.

• Día Internacional Erasmus.

• Proyecto interdisciplinar  Historia e Inglés sobre los Derechos Humanos.

• Desayunos Saludables, actividad  interdisciplinar Biología, matemáticas e Inglés.

• Proyecto Romulus and Remus; The Legend. Comic.

• World Water Day

• Planet Earth Day

• ¿Dónde queda constancia de mi participación en el Programa HablE?

 La participación del alumnado en el programa queda reflejada en el historial académico y expediente del alumno o alumna.

• ¿Qué  ventajas proporciona el Programa HablE de cara a estudios posteriores?

El alumnado que cursa la secundaria en este programa adquiere una mayor competencia lingüística en inglés al haberse enfrentado a estudios de materias con contenidos curriculares diversos en lengua extranjera. Estos conocimientos hacen que se desenvuelvan con mayor solvencia y seguridad en situaciones comunicativas de muy diversa índole.

Surprisingly, only 5% of the world's population has read these Human Rights at least once in their lives. It is for this reason, and with the aim of increasing this percentage, that our students, and with the help of their history teacher, have recorded a video reading them both in Spanish and English.

GIVE THANKS - Dar gracias

 

This year 2020 is undoubtedly being one of the most challenging ones in recent history. Covid-19 has put our world upside down and there is still a long way to go ahead of us. That is why focusing on what makes us feel grateful, happy, appreciated, safe...is a great exercise that we want to share with you all.

Este año 2020 está siendo, sin duda, uno de los más desafiantes de la historia reciente. El Covid-19 ha puesto nuestro mundo patas arriba y todavía hay un largo camino por delante. Por eso, centrarse en lo que nos hace sentir agradecidos, felices, apreciados, seguros... es un gran ejercicio que queremos compartir con todos vosotros.

ROME, THE ORIGIN: THE LEGEND OF ROMULUS AND REMUS THROUGH COMIC.

'The Classical World,. Rome: Origin, stages in the history of Rome' is one of the most trandescental units within the contents in 1º ESO, as this period laid the foundations of our civilization nowadays.

1º ESO bilingual students, in the History lesson and with the help of their teacher, have illustrated the origin and foundation of Rome through the legend of Romulus and Remus.

Below you can see a selection of the best works the students have made with great interest and dedication.

HEALTHY BREAKFAST

Healthy Breakfast is a transversal content activity (English, Maths, Biology) developed with the bilingual 1st and 3rd ESO groups in February in the school's cafeteria.

The objective has been to work on the importance of a healthy breakfast for our teenagers, using the English language as a means of communication leading to a linguistic immersion around the breakfast table. In addition, it has given us the opportunity to create good coexistence practices among students of different levels.

The students of 3rd ESO have been the leaders in the development of the activity through different actions: conducting surveys, passing on information about the food healthy breakfast should include (nutrients and functions) and also conducting various games (the breakfast tray, food pyramid game, food wheel puzzle, bookmark design and a board game about good food feeds). All this was aimed at first year students, thus promoting oral skills around healthy habits.
Bilingual teachers, the conversation assistant as well as the students in English practice and Spanish Language Practicum have collaborated in the development of this activity.

World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19th November and it has been the desire of the Bilingual Programme to delve into all the problems caused by the absence of sanitation, as 4.2 billion people in the world still do not have access to a toilet.

One of the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 is access to clean water and sanitation. Only when the entire world population has this, can article 25 of the Human Rights, in which the right to health is discussed, be fulfilled.

   The "Pee, Poo and Paper" campaign, organized by the EMA, gave a workshop in English to students of 1st and 2nd bilingual ESO, which emphasized the need not to throw in the toilet nothing but what the campaign motto preaches.
