Aprender haciendo: un proyecto para cuidar la biodiversidad local

En el IES Doña Jimena seguimos apostando por un aprendizaje activo, colaborativo y conectado con el entorno. Por eso, este curso hemos puesto en marcha un proyecto interdepartamental y multinivel que une a los departamentos de Matemáticas, Biología, Tecnología e Inglés con la participación del alumnado de 1.º y 2.º de ESO.

Nuestro objetivo es doble:

• Aprender a través de la experiencia
• Contribuir al cuidado de la biodiversidad local

¿En qué consiste el proyecto?

El trabajo se desarrolla en distintas fases, en las que cada curso aporta su granito de arena:

• Investigación

El alumnado de 1.º ESO investiga las distintas especies de aves que habitan en nuestro entorno, aprendiendo a identificarlas y a comprender su importancia en el ecosistema. Presentan sus trabajos al alumnado de 2º.

• Diseño y construcción

En 2.º ESO, los estudiantes elaboran planos a escala en Matemáticas y construyen casas para pájaros en Tecnología, combinando precisión, creatividad y trabajo en equipo.

• Acción y seguimiento

Las casas se instalarán en el parque Dr. Juan Negrín y, en los meses posteriores, el alumnado realizará un seguimiento para comprobar si las aves las utilizan, integrando los datos obtenidos en nuevas actividades educativas.

 Mucho más que un proyecto

Además de embellecer el entorno y ofrecer refugio a las aves locales, esta iniciativa fomenta valores clave como la conciencia medioambiental, el aprendizaje práctico y el trabajo colaborativo.

Se trata de una acción visible y significativa que refuerza el compromiso con la educación sostenible y demuestra que aprender también puede ser una forma de mejorar nuestro entorno. Damos las gracias al Ayuntamiento de Gijón por habernos dado permiso y haber colaborado en la colocación de las casas. 

Seguiremos informando de los avances del proyecto… ¡las aves pronto tendrán nuevas casas gracias a nuestro alumnado!

Learning by Doing: A Project to Care for Local Biodiversity

At IES Doña Jimena, we continue to promote active, collaborative learning connected to our local environment. This school year, we have launched an interdepartmental and multi-level project involving the Maths, Biology, Technology and English departments, with the participation of students from Year 7 and Year 8 (1st and 2nd ESO).

Our aim is twofold:
Learning through hands-on experience and protecting local biodiversity.

What is the project about?

The work is organised in different stages, with each year group playing an essential role:

Research
Year 7 students study the bird species found in our local area, learning how to identify them and understand their role in the ecosystem.

Design and Construction
In Year 8, students create scale drawings in Maths and build birdhouses in Technology, combining accuracy, creativity and teamwork.

Action and Monitoring
The birdhouses will be installed in a nearby park. In the following months, students will monitor whether birds use them, analyse the results and incorporate their findings into new learning activities.

More Than Just a Project

Beyond beautifying the park and providing shelter for local birds, this initiative promotes environmental awareness, practical learning and collaboration. We are deeply grateful to the Townhall for allowing and collaboarting with the development of this project.

It is a visible and meaningful action that reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and education, showing that learning can also be a powerful way to care for our environment.

STUDENTS INTERVIEW

Working as an architect: parking in the basement

'Working as an architect: parking in the basement' is an interdisciplinary project of Technology, Mathematics and English with students of 2nd ESO. The students, in groups, design a 3D parking lot for different types of vehicles, taking into account the current regulations (electric vehicles, spaces for disabled people, motorcycles, bicycles, ...). On a plan and a series of requirements already given by their teachers and using the computer program Tinkercad, the students design their own parking lot.

World Toilet Day

La Catedral de la Lluvia y El mundo es bosque

During the month of December, several visits of 4th ESO students to Laboral Art Centre and Industrial Creation have been carried out on the occasion of the celebration of World Toilet Day, which EMA Gijón commemorates every year . This year, in collaboration with Laboral Art Centre, several disciplines such as art, science and languages have come together to celebrate this event. Our students have had the privilege of seeing the premiere of the sound and visual artwork by Juanjo Palacios, La Catedral de la Lluvia, in which the process of creation of the storm tank of Hermanos Castro Park ,and its subsequent use, can be heard. The sensations perceived and the follow-up reflection have shown the need and importance of both  environmental civil engineering works, in this case related to the use of water and hidden from the view of citizens, and the relevance of art to bring these needs of the city to the viewers in a different way. 

After the first visit to the Catedral de la Lluvia, the students of 4ºESO Bilingual Programme attended La Ser radio programme, Hoy por Hoy, where the student Carlos Herminio Carballo, three times winner of the environmental storytelling contest of the City of Gijón, and his English teacher Ángeles González Bango were interviewed. Students Mara García, Claudia López and Laura Yáñez also answered questions from the presenter. 

Later on, they were invited to see the exhibition El mundo es bosque / El mundu ye viesca, where they were immersed in a fantastic biome inspired by the Asturian forests and the worlds of science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 11 February

February  11  is the International Day that conmemorates Women and Girls in Science.

This year 2022 we celebrate its 7th anniversary by remembering those women and girls, both known and unknown, who have opened a path in science for us to follow.

Globally, only 33 per cent of researchers are women, and they are awarded less research funding than men, and are less likely to be promoted. These glaring underrepresentations limit our ability to find inclusive, sustainable solutions to modern problems and build a better society for all.

As a project to raise awareness of the importance of this inclusion of women and girls in STEM , our students in 1º, 2º and 3º have dug into the lives of some important inspirational women who have become role models for all of us.

Regarding our own town, Gijón, it is clear theat women scientists are underrepresented in our street names, as there is only  a mere 5% of them.

El 11 de febrero es el Día Internacional que conmemora a las mujeres y niñas en la ciencia.

Este año 2022 celebramos su 7º aniversario recordando a aquellas mujeres y niñas, conocidas y desconocidas, que han abierto un camino en la ciencia para que nosotras lo sigamos.

A nivel mundial, sólo el 33% de las investigadoras son mujeres, y se les conceden menos fondos de investigación que a los hombres, y tienen menos probabilidades de ser promocionadas. Esta flagrante infrarrepresentación limita nuestra capacidad para encontrar soluciones inclusivas y sostenibles a los problemas modernos y construir una sociedad mejor para todos.

Como proyectos de concienciación sobre la importancia de esta inclusión de mujeres y niñas en STEM , nuestros alumnos de 1º, 2º y 3º han escarbado en las vidas de algunas importantes mujeres inspiradoras que se han convertido en modelos a seguir para todos nosotros.

En lo que respecta a nuestra propia ciudad, Gijón, está claro que las mujeres científicas están poco presentes en los nombres de nuestras calles, ya que sólo un 5% lleva el nombre de una mujer científica.
