Learning by Doing: A Project to Care for Local Biodiversity

At IES Doña Jimena, we continue to promote active, collaborative learning connected to our local environment. This school year, we have launched an interdepartmental and multi-level project involving the Maths, Biology, Technology and English departments, with the participation of students from Year 7 and Year 8 (1st and 2nd ESO).

Our aim is twofold:
Learning through hands-on experience and protecting local biodiversity.

What is the project about?

The work is organised in different stages, with each year group playing an essential role:

Research
Year 7 students study the bird species found in our local area, learning how to identify them and understand their role in the ecosystem.

Design and Construction
In Year 8, students create scale drawings in Maths and build birdhouses in Technology, combining accuracy, creativity and teamwork.

Action and Monitoring
The birdhouses will be installed in a nearby park. In the following months, students will monitor whether birds use them, analyse the results and incorporate their findings into new learning activities.

More Than Just a Project

Beyond beautifying the park and providing shelter for local birds, this initiative promotes environmental awareness, practical learning and collaboration. We are deeply grateful to the Townhall for allowing and collaboarting with the development of this project.

It is a visible and meaningful action that reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and education, showing that learning can also be a powerful way to care for our environment.

We will continue to share updates as the project develops.

Celebrating International Human Rights Day at Our School

Celebrating International Human Rights Day at Our School

Every year on December 10, the world comes together to honor International Human Rights Day, a date that reminds us of the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every person. This year marks the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and our school community has embraced the occasion with creativity and purpose.

Did you know that only 5% of the global population has read the Human Rights Declaration at least once? To help close this gap and raise awareness, our 1st Bilingual ESO students have taken action! They designed vibrant posters featuring 20 of the 30 Articles in both English and Spanish, now proudly displayed on classroom doors throughout the school.

But that’s not all—they also recorded these articles in both languages, bringing the words to life with their voices. You can explore their work and listen to their recordings in the presentation linked below.

Through these initiatives, we aim to make Human Rights visible and meaningful for everyone in our educational community. Let’s continue to learn, share, and stand together for equality and dignity!

Thanksgiving

 🍁🍂Decorated Turkey Competition 2025!🍂🍁

Our 1º ESO bilingual students have shown incredible creativity by decorating turkeys and sharing heartfelt messages about what they are thankful for in life.

But that’s not all—students from 2º, 3º, and 4º ESO joined in too, contributing their own gratitude posts to make this celebration even more special.

A big thank you to everyone for spreading positivity and appreciation!

Halloween- Samhain

To celebrate All Hallows' Eve, the students of 2º ESO have created pumpkins made from circles of different sizes. In this way, they actively collaborate and build relationships while working with mathematics in teams.

Fundación Princesa de Asturias – Toma la palabra. La voz de Serena

Premio Princesa de Asturias de los Deportes 2025: Serena Williams

Bilingual Programme Students Take Part in “Toma la palabra” with a Project on Serena Williams.

As part of the cultural activities organised around the Princess of Asturias Awards, several students from our bilingual programme have participated in the initiative “Toma la palabra”, which encourages reflection and expression in English.

This year, their work focused on Serena Williams, allowing them to explore not only her outstanding sports career but also her personality, talent, and the impact she has made as a role model both within and beyond the world of tennis. The activity was a valuable opportunity to develop language skills while engaging with themes such as perseverance, excellence, and equality.

4º ESO

Participant: Isabella Bernal Duarte

 Exercise 2 – Serena’s Motivational Words

Title: Confidence and Hard Work to Combat Insecurity

 Isabella's reflection:

"I have chosen exercise 2 because I find both the video and the poem very inspiring, and their content encourages me to overcome my insecurities".

English text:

CONFIDENCE AND HARD WORK TO COMBAT INSECURITY

The message of Serena Williams that had impacted on me the most is the importance of believing in yourself even when other people don’t. She explains that the confidence is not something you are given, but something you build with hard work. This idea is important to me and inspires me because I usually feel insecure about what people say, or about my abilities. Her words based on the poem “Still I rise” remind me that I need to trust more in me and the things I can do with hard work.

Question for  Serena Williams:

"What can you say or what advice would you give to the teenagers who feel insecure or afraid when they try something new?"

1º ESO

Participants:  Lautaro Correia Padrón, Diego Díaz Solares, Javier Frías de Esteban, Tomás Izquierdo Gallego, Maartje Alida Van Veelen.

Exercise 2 – Serena’s Motivational Words

Title: Still we Rise

Student's reflection:

"We selected the third exercise because we thought it would be interesting to learn about African-American women's literature and the poem that inspired Serena's words".

English text:

STILL WE RISE

Serena’s words have impacted us. They have made us think that every defeat and every victory help you to become the best version of yourself.

Also, the beautiful poem, written by Maya Angelou and popularized by Serena Williams in her motivational speech, has taught us about the importance of persistence, even when other people send you hate. This poem makes you think about clearing your goals, your objectives and your dreams.

Question for  Serena Williams:

"What gave you the strength to continue fighting to achieve your goals?"

Parking Design [Maths & Technology]

This Learning Situation, titled "Parking Design," challenges students to combine research, design, and technical skills to solve a real-world problem.
The main goal is to create a detailed 3D model of a parking facility that complies with current regulations in Asturias regarding parking space dimensions and maneuvering zones. The project began in Math class, where students created an initial layout by distributing parking spaces for cars, motorcycles, and disabled users, adding service areas, and calculating the ramp slope.
In Technology class, this draft was transformed into a detailed 3D model using design software. Students researched the legal dimensions for each parking type and maneuvering spaces, and completed a full report to support their work.
This project allowed students to apply geometry, spatial planning, and digital design in a real-world context, while fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

2ºA Bilingual Group Takes on the Paper Structure Challenge

The students of 2ºA Bilingual have successfully completed a project in their Technology and Digitalization class. The challenge? Design and build a 15 cm high paper structure capable of supporting the weight of all the books in the classroom, using as little paper as possible.

First, each student drew their own sketch. Then, in groups, they shared their ideas, chose the best one together, and divided the work in their group.

They built the structure, wrote a technical report on the computer to explain how they did it, and finally... tested it to see if it was strong enough!

Curious to know if they succeeded? Check out this video:

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2024

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2024

International Human Rights Day is celebrated every December 10 to promote the rights and freedoms of people in the world.

This year, to celebrate the 76th anniversary of its Declaration, we have taken a series of actions with the objective of making these Rights visible to the entire educational community. It is known that only 5% of the world's population has read the Human Rights at least once in their lives. For this reason, and with the aim of bridging this gap, the students of 1st bilingual ESO have created 30 posters that read each of the Articles both in English and Spanish. These posters can be seen displayed on the doors of every class. In addition, the same students have recorded them in both languages. You can see their work and listen to their voices in the above presentation.

Give Thanks!

Working as an architect: parking in the basement

'Working as an architect: parking in the basement' is an interdisciplinary project of Technology, Mathematics and English with students of 2nd ESO. The students, in groups, design a 3D parking lot for different types of vehicles, taking into account the current regulations (electric vehicles, spaces for disabled people, motorcycles, bicycles, ...). On a plan and a series of requirements already given by their teachers and using the computer program Tinkercad, the students design their own parking lot.

Bridge Construction

Technology students of 2nd ESO have created a bridge with paper tubes . Working in groups, they have carried out the technological process, starting from an initial design to the construction and testing of its structure.

Desayunos Saludables- Healthy Breakfast

Our 1st year students conducted a survey on their eating habits for breakfast. 3rd ESO pupils analyzed this information  and translated it into graphics. They then shared the results with the 1st-year students, explaining the importance of maintaining a healthy diet throughout the day for both body and mind.

Christmas figures

Our students from 2º bilingual have ensembled and decorated these Christmas figues made most of them of paper circles.

They may look easy to make, but they are not as easy as you think, even in groups.

However, they thoroughly enjoyed working collaboratively, helping each other and having fun.

Merry Christmas to you all!
