Aprender haciendo: un proyecto para cuidar la biodiversidad local
En el IES Doña Jimena seguimos apostando por un aprendizaje activo, colaborativo y conectado con el entorno. Por eso, este curso hemos puesto en marcha un proyecto interdepartamental y multinivel que une a los departamentos de Matemáticas, Biología, Tecnología e Inglés con la participación del alumnado de 1.º y 2.º de ESO.
Nuestro objetivo es doble:
- Aprender a través de la experiencia
- Contribuir al cuidado de la biodiversidad local
¿En qué consiste el proyecto?
El trabajo se desarrolla en distintas fases, en las que cada curso aporta su granito de arena:
- Investigación
- Diseño y construcción
- Acción y seguimiento
Mucho más que un proyecto
Además de embellecer el entorno y ofrecer refugio a las aves locales, esta iniciativa fomenta valores clave como la conciencia medioambiental, el aprendizaje práctico y el trabajo colaborativo.
Se trata de una acción visible y significativa que refuerza el compromiso con la educación sostenible y demuestra que aprender también puede ser una forma de mejorar nuestro entorno. Damos las gracias al Ayuntamiento de Gijón por habernos dado permiso y haber colaborado en la colocación de las casas.

Learning by Doing: A Project to Care for Local Biodiversity
At IES Doña Jimena, we continue to promote active, collaborative learning connected to our local environment. This school year, we have launched an interdepartmental and multi-level project involving the Maths, Biology, Technology and English departments, with the participation of students from Year 7 and Year 8 (1st and 2nd ESO).
Our aim is twofold:
Learning through hands-on experience and protecting local biodiversity.
What is the project about?
The work is organised in different stages, with each year group playing an essential role:
Research
Year 7 students study the bird species found in our local area, learning how to identify them and understand their role in the ecosystem.
Design and Construction
In Year 8, students create scale drawings in Maths and build birdhouses in Technology, combining accuracy, creativity and teamwork.
Action and Monitoring
The birdhouses will be installed in a nearby park. In the following months, students will monitor whether birds use them, analyse the results and incorporate their findings into new learning activities.
More Than Just a Project
Beyond beautifying the park and providing shelter for local birds, this initiative promotes environmental awareness, practical learning and collaboration. We are deeply grateful to the Townhall for allowing and collaboarting with the development of this project.
It is a visible and meaningful action that reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and education, showing that learning can also be a powerful way to care for our environment.
